Device: Printer Set Up and Troubleshooting

Learn how to connect printers to POS devices and set up networks for common printer types used with Billfold POS.

Billfold's current compatible printers are: Epson TM-M30II, TM-M30III and TM-u220. We currently connect to printers only via WiFi or via a LAN connection. There is currently no support for USB or Bluetooth printer connectivity. Instructions for connecting the printer to a network are at the end of this article.

Use Category Type

If sending all items to a single printer once payment is received, use this guide.

Utilizing category types (Food, Drinks, Other) to route to printers

If you've set up printer rules and routing categories, see here, this takes you through how to set these up on the POS.

Common troubleshooting steps

Starting Steps:

  1. Verify the Network that your POS is operating on. It is imperative that the POS and printer are on the same network to communicate

    1. If using LAN via Ethernet plugged into the printer, ensure it is broadcasting the correct network

  2. When choosing an installation location for your printer:

    • Connectivity:

      • For Wi-Fi connection: it is important to keep the printer near the network router (the recommended distance is less than 150 feet from your router)

        • Wi-Fi connection is not recommended for use in kitchens due to higher risk of interference with the connection

        • Wifi Setup: Wireless dongle (for TM-m30 and TM-m30II models; TM-m30III has built-in Wi-Fi)

      • For LAN connection: You'll need an Ethernet cable long enough to reach from your router to the desired printer location.

        • LAN Setup: Ethernet cable (sold separately)

    • Keep the printer away from heat sources to prevent potential discoloration of the thermal paper

Setting Up Your Printer

  1. Connect the Printer to Power

    • Plug the power cable into the printer’s AC adapter port

    • Connect the AC adapter to a power outlet

    • Turn the printer on using the power button

  2. Load Thermal Paper

    • Open the printer cover

    • Insert the paper roll with the paper feeding from the bottom

    • Pull a small amount of paper over the edge and close the cover

  3. Connect the Printer to the Network or Device

    • For TM-m30 and TM-m30II models, ensure the wireless dongle is connected. (TM-m30III has built-in Wi-Fi)

    • Download and install the Epson TM Utility app on your device (Apple or Google Play)

    • Open the app and select the Wi-Fi Setup Wizard and follow the steps to connect

    • Follow the prompts to select your printer model and enter the Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password for the network you're connecting it to. The printer must be connected to the same network that provides internet access for your POS device so that the printer and POS are on the same network.

    • Once connected, your printer will receive an IP address which will be used to connect the printer in the POS application (We recommend labeling the printer with this IP address in case you need to connect additional devices or reconnect a device).

In-App Printer Connection

  1. Open the POS Application (i.e. BRT 0.0.0 GNR or BRT 0.0.0 LTE) and login to your POS

  2. Open the in-app settings by tapping the settings icon in the bottom left hand of the screen (GNR) or the top right of the screen (LITE)

  3. There are two printing options:

    1. Select Receipt Printer if utilizing our guest check function for tabs (this functionality cannot be used for Quick Orders)

    2. Select Prep Stations if need to send orders to printers based on category or routing categories

  4. If Selecting:

    1. Receipt Printer:

      1. Tap Receipt Printer and then tap Connect Printer

      2. The POS will then begin to look for printers, once printers appear you can match them via the IP.

        1. GNR Application:

        2. LITE Application:
You can tap the settings icon to view the IP or turn your device into landscape mode by flipping it horizontally. If you go to settings, you'll need to tap back to the main connection screen to connect.

      3. Once your printer has been found, tap the IP address/IP on the main Tap to Select the Printer screen
        GNR

        LITE

      4. Once connected, the screen will display the connect printer's IP address and options to Disconnect or Change Printer.

    2. Prep Stations:

      1. Tap Prep Stations, and then two options will appear either print by Category Type or Use Prep Stations

        1. Category Type is broken down into a couple of options:

          1. Send all items to one printer

This will send every single paid order to the same printer. Use this set up if you need everything printer and only have one printer.

            1. Tap Send all items to one printer and then Connect

          2. Route items to printers by category type (Food, Drinks or Other).

Use this if you have a couple of printers and want products to be printed in certain locations based on their category type.

            1. Tap Route items to printers by category and then select the category type to configure (repeat these steps for each category, as needed) and then tap Connect

        2. Use Prep Stations

For more information on how to set up printer rules and routing categories, please read through this article. This step-by-step assumes you've already built out the framework to utilize the prep station rules.

          1. At the top of the screen, toggle from Use Category Type to Use Prep Stations.

          2. Tap Add Prep Station.

          3. Select the required Prep Station from the Available.

          4. A screen will open showing the Printer Rules configured for that station.

          5. Tap Add Printer next to a specific rule.

          6. Select the printer from the list of devices found on the network. To select the printer, tap its IP Address.

            Key Technical Points:

            • One Rule per Printer: A printer can only be connected to one printer rule within a single Prep Station. To print multiple categories to one printer, add multiple Routing Categories to a single rule.

            • Cross-Station Use: One printer can be connected to rules in two different Prep Stations.

            • Persistent Connection: Printer connections are saved even if you turn off the screen, log out, exit the app, or change the Revenue Center.

            • Removing Stations: To stop a station from displaying, tap DELETE in the upper-right corner of the rule screen in the app. This will also disable all printers connected to those rules.

Common Troubleshooting:

  1. If your printer is not printing after selecting print or after an order is paid:

    1. Verify that the paper is insert correct as displayed at the beginning of this article

    2. Verify that the POS is not on a different network

    3. Verify that the Printer is not on a different network (connectivity instructions at the beginning)

  2. If you're receiving duplicate tickets being printed, this is due to the printer being connected to a printer rule via the Use prep stations section AND connected to print by routing by category type.

Disconnect the printer from either Routing by Category Type or the printer rule within Use Prep Stations

  3. If your POS is offline, tickets will not print since the printer and POS are unable to communicate. Check your wifi connection or contact your event or venue's IT team.

    1. Switching networks will not work unless you switch BOTH the POS and the Printer.
